Writing and gardening

Well, I must have galloped over Jo's email to me when I got back from holiday. Happened on it today when she reminded me. Panic of course as I've NEVER blogged. Surprise, surprise no doubt from all you writers and highly experienced bloggers. Thought I'd got out of it ... but NO, these things always get you in the end.

I've called it writing and gardening. Gardening steadily got the upper hand as the day wore on. And not even writing - just reading, catching up on all those submissions I missed while dawdling around Beatrix Potters Hill House in the Lakes. Beautiful! Now I'm going to wallpaper my ceiling too. Then on to Wordsworth's Dove Cott. They really roughed it there that lot. Did you know that Dorothy chopped up her own veggies, and stoked the fire? And ... here is my BIGGIE ... I am related, by marriage and far back along the line, to William himself. You see my grandmother was a Hutchinson. And Mary's sister Sarah lived with Coleridge for a while. Well, I've got to brag about something. Even if it's someone else's writing.

Then a strenuous and spectacular walk amongst the lakes. From which I think I shall need TWO new knees. Wonderful though.

Back to gardening ... inspired by the reading I pulled out a whole large 'broken heart' - or that's what we call it here in Holland. It was pretty massive and I've just taken it over to a friend. 'Won't you stop for a wee glass of white?' she invited. An hour later I pottered back and found this mail from Jo about the blog.

And now I'm going to take it out on the nasturtians that are swarming triffid-like across my garden. I'm really interested to see what is actually underneath. Apart from large orange slugs, and the occasional cat that's bedded himself (both he's) down amongst all that exuberant orange and yellow.

Will tell you next time ...
